When you start receiving regular meat deliveries, one of the first challenges is freezer management. Without a simple system, it’s easy for meat to pile up, get forgotten, or become difficult to use efficiently.
A good freezer strategy helps turn bulk meat into everyday meals instead of clutter.
Organize by date and type
One of the simplest systems is to organize meat by date received and type of cut. You can use:
Clear bins or bags labeled by week or month
A simple list on your phone or on the freezer door
The “first in, first out” rule — use older meat before newer deliveries
This reduces the chance of meat getting buried and forgotten.
Portion before freezing
Instead of freezing large pieces whole, consider portioning meat into meal-sized amounts before freezing. This makes it much easier to defrost only what you need.
For ground meat, dividing it into 250g or 500g portions is often practical. For larger cuts, you can portion after cooking (e.g., cooked pulled beef or stew) if that fits your routine better.
Defrosting methods
Different cuts benefit from different defrosting approaches:
Fridge defrosting: Best for steaks and larger cuts. Plan ahead.
Cold water method: Faster but requires more attention.
Cooking from frozen: Works well for ground meat and slow-cooked cuts.
Having a few reliable defrosting methods reduces stress and food waste.
Keep it simple
You don’t need an elaborate system. The goal is simply to know what you have and be able to find and use it without friction. Even a basic approach is much better than none.
